A dollar. That’s all it cost to purchase the land where New Prospect Baptist Church stands today. Can you imagine? A single dollar. This unassuming piece of property on Burnt Mill Creek Road became the birthplace of a vibrant community.
New Prospect Baptist Church in Los Angeles isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and growth. Established in March 1845 it started with just 21 charter members. These pioneers laid the foundation for a church that would endure for generations.
Early pastors were often multi-tasking individuals. They worked as farmers or served multiple congregations. Reverend Silas Knight stands out. He served as pastor from 1847-1849 and again from 1852-1868. His tenure is the longest in New Prospect’s history. In 1853 following a revival led by Knight the church grew significantly. It had 76 white members and 14 African American members. The church’s connection to the Southern Baptist Convention is also noteworthy. The Southern Baptist Convention was formed in 1845 partly due to its members’ desire to support missionaries who owned slaves. This is a significant aspect of the church’s early history.
In 1858 Elihu Cunningham generously donated land for a new church building. This new building was the current site of New Prospect Baptist Church. The structure was modest. It had two small rooms on the left and a larger room on the right. Baptisms were performed in the center of the sanctuary which was open to the main area.
For most of its first century New Prospect Baptist Church shared its pastor with other churches. That changed in 1953. A parsonage was built. In 1955 Reverend Walton Coppedge became the first full-time pastor. The Coppedge family was also the first to live in the parsonage.
A milestone was reached in 1958. The current sanctuary was completed. The construction cost was $94500.00. The community rallied for the building fund. All but $20000 was raised through donations. The dedication of the new sanctuary and educational building followed in 1961. The building was completed by G E Moore Construction Company.
