Can you believe this sanctuary has journeyed through different faiths? Today, we stand before New Mount Sinai Church a building rich with history. It stands as a testament to Detroit’s evolving communities.

Originally, this building was Beth David Synagogue. It opened its doors in 1928. The synagogue served a growing Jewish population. They had moved further north in the city.

Beth David was an Orthodox congregation. It was founded in 1892 by 14 Russian immigrants. They first gathered in a rented space. Their first permanent home was dedicated in 1900.

As Detroit’s auto industry boomed, more Jewish people arrived. Many came from New York and the East Coast. Beth David grew and moved to a larger location in 1915. By 1928, they inaugurated this magnificent structure.

The new synagogue had a seating capacity of 1600. It was a sign of the community’s prosperity. Another large synagogue Shaarey Zedek later joined them.

Around 1934, Beth David faced financial struggles. It reorganized as B’Nai David. The congregation then made a significant change. It introduced mixed seating for men and women. This was a break from Orthodox tradition.

In the late 1940s, Jewish residents began moving to northwest Detroit. African Americans then filled their homes. Some say real estate agents fueled racial fears. This encouraged rapid sales of homes.

B’Nai David purchased land in Southfield Township in 1954. They moved out of Detroit in 1958.

New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church bought the building in 1960. The congregation was founded in 1919. They had previously met in storefronts. They also met at another church building on Mack Avenue.

In 1928, a bomb severely damaged that church. It was likely a racially motivated act. The community rebuilt and persevered.

The church was forced to move again in 1960. This was because the city needed the land for a school. New Mt. Zion then acquired this building.

The move provided an opportunity. The church served a rapidly growing African American community. By 1964, the church had 1,700 members.

New Mt. Zion chose to preserve the building’s architecture. They made changes only to accommodate Christian services. A choir stand and baptismal pool were added. A medallion of the Tablets of the Law was modified with a cross.

Today, New Mount Sinai Church stands as a symbol. It represents faith community and change. Its walls echo with the stories of different congregations. Each has shaped Detroit’s unique cultural landscape. Take a moment to appreciate the enduring spirit of this place. It connects Detroit’s past to its present.
