“Let’s step back in time.” I want to tell you the story of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg. It is a testament to faith and resilience.
The story of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church begins in the shadows of slavery. Around 1853 or 1854, enslaved people gathered to worship God. They called themselves Sunnyside Baptist Church. Even in bondage, they sought spiritual freedom.
Reverend Jacob Govan became their pastor in 1865. He served until 1877. In 1870, Sunnyside Baptist changed its name to Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. This marked a new chapter for the congregation.
Tragedy struck in 1902 when fire destroyed their church. But their spirit remained unbroken. The congregation rebuilt in 1903. Mr. A. W. Thorne, a black builder, constructed the new church. This was a remarkable achievement. African Americans often struggled to make a living during this time.
The new Mount Pisgah Baptist Church was architecturally significant. It showcased the Romanesque Revival style. Its brick construction and sophisticated design were noteworthy. The pyramid with cross-gable design was unique. Its fenestration detail and interior features were special.
Mount Pisgah became an important example of religious architecture. It stood as a beacon of hope. It was one of the oldest churches in Orangeburg and South Carolina. In 1985, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Mount Pisgah Baptist Church has been led by 13 ministers. Reverend Jacob Govan was the first. Others include Reverend J. Harvey and Reverend J. Williams. Reverend A. J. Stokes and Reverend Samuel W. Flynn also served. Reverend R. Rice and Reverend J. H. Posey led the congregation. Reverend Charles D. Salley and Reverend Nelson C. Nix guided the church. Reverend John D. Rhodes and Reverend F.G.S. Everett contributed to its history. Reverend D. Edward Chaney also served as pastor. In 2011, Reverend Gregory A. Young became the 13th pastor.
Reverend Nelson C. Nix served for over forty years. He was influential in the African American community. He was the dean of mathematics at South Carolina State College.
Today, Mount Pisgah Baptist Church continues its mission. It makes disciples and evangelizes the world. It represents Christ in all its actions. It stands as a symbol of faith and perseverance.
