What began as a vision in 1951 blossomed into the New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church. R.F. Sanders described a church as a body of believers following Christ’s teachings. This vision took root when New Pilgrim Baptist Church grew from Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Rev. W.H. Black served as Pastor and Organizer.
Deacon Sam Worthy suggested the name New Pilgrim Baptist Church. Members approved and it became a corporation on February 11, 1952. The congregation first worshiped at Mount Hebron Baptist Church. This was on Ann and Jefferson Streets. Membership grew and services moved to Wayland Baptist Church. The New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church then acquired its first building. This was at 1601 Rutland Avenue on March 9, 1952.
Remarkably, the Rutland Avenue building was paid off in four years. A mortgage burning ceremony was held on March 11, 1956. The New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church relocated to its current site. This is at 629 N. Washington Street. The move occurred on December 11, 1961.
After Rev. W.H. Black’s death in 1974, Rev. Jesse Robert Halsey became Pastor. He was promoted from Assistant Pastor. Halsey served from 1974 to 1982.
In 1982, Rev. Roosevelt Davenport, Sr. was elected Pastor. He served faithfully for 35 years. His service continued until his death in 2017.
On June 17, 2020, Rev. Quinton M. Herbert, Jr. became the fourth pastor. He leads the New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church today. The church anticipates growth under Pastor Herbert’s ministry.
Looking back, the New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church has thrived. God has blessed it with over fifteen active ministries. Several Associate Ministers contribute to its mission. All work for God’s glory and kingdom. The church is grateful for nearly 70 years of ministry. Glory be to God for His great works.
