“Bombarded? No. Blessed!” That’s the feeling you get standing before New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.

This magnificent building at 2201 Elmhurst Street has a rich story. It reflects Detroit’s changing communities. It stands as a testament to faith and perseverance.

Originally, this wasn’t a Baptist church at all. Imagine this area bustling with Jewish immigrants. In 1928, this building opened as Beth David Synagogue. It was a grand symbol of their community’s growth. The synagogue served one of the city’s largest Jewish congregations for about 30 years.

The Detroit’s Jewish population expanded outward from the city center as subsequent generations accumulated wealth and sought new homes.

But times changed. As the Jewish community moved, African Americans moved in. New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church needed a new home too.

Founded in 1919, New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church first met in a storefront. It was led by Rev. Major Baldwin. By 1928 under Rev. James S. Williams Sr., the congregation had grown. A larger building was needed.

In 1960, New Mt. Zion purchased this building from B’Nai David Synagogue for $140000. The congregation moved in.

The move marked a new chapter for the church. New Mt. Zion had an opportunity to serve a growing African-American community. The church became one of Detroit’s premier churches due to its large seating capacity and hosted community events.

The congregation chose to preserve the original synagogue architecture. They only made changes when necessary. A choir stand and baptismal pool were added. A plaster medallion depicting the Tablets of the Law was modified to include a cross.

Look closely. The white, light blue and gold color scheme remains as it was. The congregation retained the leaded-glass windows and decorative plaster. Even the lighting fixtures remain unchanged.

In 1992, under the leadership of Rev. James L. Newby III, an addition broke ground. It was completed in 1996. It’s now named the James L. Newby III Educational Wing.

Throughout the 1990s, New Mt. Zion continued to serve the community. It hosted events for a population much broader than its membership.

Today New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church stands as a symbol of community transformation. It’s a place where two distinct histories intertwine. It shows how faith can adapt. It highlights how communities evolve. Next time you’re in Detroit, take a moment to appreciate this landmark’s enduring story. New Mt. Zion is a place where history sings from every window.
