“The temple I am going to build will be great because our God is greater than all other gods.” These words encapsulate the spirit of New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Established in 1942, New Macedonia Baptist Church has a rich history rooted in faith and community.
The New Macedonia Baptist Church began in the heart of Harris County. The late Rev. Ed Williams organized it. The area was then known as Sawdust Alley. Today, it is The Sumpter Plaza Apartments.
Ten people gathered at Bro. Dial Gilmore’s home for the initial meeting. They opened with a hymn, scripture, and prayer. They chose officers and the church name. Everyone agreed on New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Williams became the first pastor. Bro. C.B. Johnson was the first member. He later became a deacon.
For three months, services took place at 2107 Lee Street. After that, property was purchased at 2106 Hailey. Initially, a tent-like structure with a sawdust floor served as their place of worship. In 1947, they built a small wood-framed building. Then, in June 1955, the building at 2106 Hailey Street was erected.
Rev. Ed Williams passed away in December 1955. In 1956, Rev. A.B. Thompson became the pastor. He led faithfully until his death two years later. In November 1958, Rev. George Willie Persons began to lead. Under his leadership, several auxiliaries were created. In 1972, the church bought more land. Rev. Persons remained pastor until his death on December 15, 1987.
Dr. D.R. Hector, Sr. became the shepherd in May 1988. Under his leadership, more auxiliaries were organized. A Scholarship Fund was also created. The church grew spiritually and financially. In 1997, New Macedonia marched into its new home at 2107 Gregg Street.
Enhancements were made to the new facility. With the Holy Ghost’s guidance, the building was paid off on Victory Sunday. That was July 6, 2003. Dr. Hector, Sr.’s leadership proved a blessing. Church By-laws were chartered with the State of Texas. Several deacons were ordained. Four brothers confessed to the ministry. Revs. D.R. Hector, Jr., Charleston Williams, David Gray, and Adrian Wynn were ordained by Pastor Hector, Sr.
Dr. D.R. Hector, Sr. passed away on November 4, 2005. His legacy continues. Rev. D.R. Hector, Jr. became Assistant Pastor in 1999. On December 18, 2005, he was unanimously voted as the next pastor. Rev. Hector was officially installed on April 2, 2006.
Pastor Hector, Jr., implemented Project Trinity in July 2006. It involved renovating the current building and removing the old one. The plan included reconstructing a modern facility. The new facility would accommodate classrooms and a fellowship center. Phases I and II were completed under Pastor Hector, Jr.’s guidance.
In August 2019, the church celebrated paying off its first church van. Despite the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, the church family grew spiritually. They enhanced their spiritual platform. They implemented weekly Mobile Ministry Worship on Wednesdays. They also started Virtual Sunday Morning Worship Services.
The mission at New Macedonia is clear. It is to demonstrate God’s love through working. It is to educate God’s people through the Word. The church creates family through welding. It communicates God’s Word through witnessing. New Macedonia celebrates God’s presence through worship.
Pastor Danny Ray Hector, Jr. has served in various capacities. He was Brotherhood Director and Women’s Ministry Teacher. He also directed the Prison Ministry and served as Youth and Assistant Pastor. He has been married to 1st Lady Alice Hector for 30 years.
New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church is a warm congregation. It is multi-generational and faith-driven. The church shares Christ’s love. It applies His Gospel to daily lives.
