“Founded in 1958.” That’s the story of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. This church began with humble roots. It has grown into a beacon of faith and community service.
In the late 1950s a group of dedicated individuals felt a calling. They wanted to establish a new place of worship. They wanted it to reflect their values and commitment to the Gospel. With the guidance of Rev. W.M. Bowie Jr. New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church was organized on July 26, 1958. Rev. Bowie was the pastor of True Light Missionary Baptist Church. He served as moderator. He was assisted by Rev. Earnest Hogan, Rev. R.F. Green, and Rev. F.N. Houston.
Bro. E.R. Brew recommended that the newly organized group be named “New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church”. The body accepted the recommendation. Rev. T.E. Harper moved that Rev. W.J. Profit be called as Pastor. The motion was seconded by Rev. Earnest Hogan and carried. In 1997, the church was incorporated. Its name was changed to “New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Inc.”
In the early years, Pastor W. J. Profit and Sis. Dorothy Profit opened their home. Worship services took place in their double car garage. On that first night, ten members joined the church.
Showing great faith, the church purchased an acre of land in 1961. It was paid for in just two years. God touched the hearts of the school board members of Klein I.S.D. The church was allowed to hold worship services in Garden City Elementary School.
Phase 1 of the present edifice was erected and dedicated to God in 1964. In 1973, two more acres of land were purchased. The purpose was to build a multi-purpose building. Phase two began in 1974. A library, ladies’ lounge, and two new offices for the Pastor and secretary were added to the edifice.
During phase three in 1984-1985, an East and West wing were constructed. Since its spiritual conception, New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church has grown. Over 52 years of ministry, around 490 people have become members. Rev. & Sis. T. E. Harper remained faithful members.
In January 2005, Founder and Pastor W.J. Profit went home to rest. The church faced many challenges without an “Under Shepherd”. In January of 2006, Rev. De’Von Delonte Jackson became pastor. He is committed to “Equipping the Saints, To Evangelize the World, While Glorifying the Savior”.
In 2006, the entire church parking lot was repaved. A new computer system was purchased. The church sound system was upgraded. In 2007, the interior of the church was painted. Church offices were made secure. Reserved parking places were constructed. These were for the founding pastor’s widow, Sis. L. J. Profit, guest ministers and Pastor Jackson.
Hurricane Ike tested the church’s foundation in 2008. Ike’s devastation caused the church to look at needed areas of modifications. The church maintained and proved itself to be a “church built upon a rock”.
In 2009, a sign was placed on the property. The pulpit, choir stand, and baptistery were remodeled. A sound room was relocated and constructed. Sixteen chandeliers and 20 chairs for the choir stand were purchased by members. The church launched its first website. Its ministry efforts are on you-tube.
New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community. Its history is a reminder of what can be achieved through dedication and a strong belief in God. This church’s story is one of overcoming challenges and remaining steadfast in its mission. It is ready to serve its community and spread the Gospel for years to come.
