Gazing upon the New Jerusalem Church, one can almost hear the echoes of Cambodia’s tumultuous past. The New Jerusalem Church stands as a testament to the resilience of faith amidst trials. The history of Christianity in Cambodia, and therefore also the New Jerusalem Church, is a story of perseverance. The first missionaries arrived over 450 years ago, bringing with them the “Good News.” In 1555, Father Gaspar Da Cruz, a Portuguese priest, began his work, planting the seeds of a faith that would face many storms. Cambodia’s history, marked by conflict and political upheaval, impacted the growth of the New Jerusalem Church and Christianity as a whole. Siamese invasions in the 18th century displaced Cambodian Catholics, forcing them to seek refuge in Battambang. In 1866, King Norodom requested the church’s return to Phnom Penh, marking a turning point. Growth continued, and by the mid-20th century, the first Cambodian priest was ordained. A dark chapter unfolded with the rise of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975. Churches, including Catholic establishments like the New Jerusalem Church, were destroyed, and religious figures, both Catholic and non-Catholic, were targeted. Many lost their lives. The years following the Khmer Rouge’s collapse in 1979 were a time of rebuilding. Catholics returned, though some remained in refugee camps along the Thai-Cambodian border. Those who returned practiced their faith discreetly, often facing discrimination. It wasn’t until 1990 that the government officially recognized the Catholic Church once again. The first Eucharist celebrated after the Khmer Rouge era was a momentous occasion, attended by thousands of Catholics and other Christians. The New Jerusalem Church, like other churches in Cambodia, symbolizes this resurgence of faith. It represents a beacon of hope, a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Cambodian people.
