Built in 1965 a resilient group of Christians founded the New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Their initial meetings took place at 747 Carton Street. This was the home of Reverend L W Owens. They initially called themselves the Rose Hill Baptist Mission. A week later services moved to 1033 E York Street. The name changed to New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist.
The New Jerusalem Baptist Church continued to grow. By December 1967 the congregation had bought a building at 1024 Holtslander Avenue. Three hundred and fifty members moved there in March 1968. The church thrived. Its membership boomed reaching 2100 by January 1991. The church then became New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church.
Tragedy struck in July 1991. A fire destroyed the church building. The damage cost over $650000. Undeterred services moved to C A R E Inc. This was a drug outreach facility. It had a church building on its complex. The congregation persevered.
Construction began on a new complex. Phase one included an educational center and fellowship hall. This was dedicated in February 1993. It was named the Reverend L W and Ella Owens Educational Center. It focused on the church’s youth. Phase two started in September 1994. This added a large sanctuary chapel offices and a library conference room. Phase two finished in June 1995.
In September 2001 another project began. This was Operation Blessing. A new building was constructed at 1030 Charles Street. It was two blocks north of Carpenter Road. This project finished in April 2002. The New Jerusalem Baptist Church has witnessed incredible growth and resilience. Through fire and challenges the congregation’s faith has remained strong. The church stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of its members.
