New Hope Baptist Church of Los Angeles has joyfully spread the Gospel for many years. Parishioners worship in a historic building at 5200 South Central Avenue. This expansive building was designed by the renowned African American architect Paul Revere Williams. It features a spacious sanctuary and a lighted baptismal pool. A sectional choir loft and offices for the pastor are also inside.

But it’s the people that have made New Hope’s reputation. Pastors and members create a spirit-filled Body of Christ. They welcome others to fellowship and join them in serving the Lord.

One member said she loves her church. It’s a family church and a loving church. They put their arms around you when you come in. It’s just wonderful.

Another member said that after people sit through a service, they usually want to join. Seeing a variety of people makes them more comfortable. They say they are not a church just for Black people. They are for Christians.

New Hope’s multicultural and multigenerational membership is distinctive. The congregation includes people of all ages. White and Latino worshippers praise God with just as much spirit and enthusiasm as the African American members.

The church is open to different people and very faithful to helping individuals. They’ve had people come to the church who have had problems. They sit down and talk to them. They try and help people.

Many people are assisted through programs held at the church’s B.O. Byrd Memorial Christian Education Center. Older community members are aided by residing at the New Hope Senior Villa. It’s an affordable apartment complex located on Central Avenue.

Dynamic pastors led New Hope, and it quickly became a church with its heart in the African American community. In 1945, a new pastor expanded the church’s many outreach services. The congregation quickly outgrew its original campus. The pastor selected Paul R. Williams to design a new building. It would fulfill New Hope’s role as an educational center for the evolving urban African American community. The congregation moved into its new home in 1954.

Williams’ design for New Hope Baptist was not one of the traditional historic revival styles. The building’s solid structure represented its place as an important pillar of the African American community. Its clean lines and impressive interior reflected the sophistication of modern Los Angeles. The sanctuary, baptismal pool, and sectional choir stand reminded the congregation of its important spiritual purpose.

The Williams-designed sanctuary remains an impressive tool. It carries out the ministry’s motto: Transforming Lives Through Christ Centered Ministries. New Hope’s campus continues to grow as the church’s list of social services expands.
