New Hope Church

Pastor Theodore L. Deaver Sr. saw a need in Houston. He rallied twelve people to his cause. This marked the beginning of New Hope Baptist Church in January 1992. Their first service took place at Christa McAuliffe Middle School’s auditorium. Imagine the echoing hymns in that large space on February 9, 1992. Evening services and Bible study were held at Pastor Deaver’s home, a more intimate setting. New Hope Church quickly outgrew this arrangement. In 1993, they moved to a business complex on South Post Oak. This allowed them to hold all services in one location. Growth continued, prompting another move within the complex in 1994, doubling their space. Even with this expansion, Pastor Deaver’s vision grew. New Hope Church acquired 3.7 acres of land on Court Road at Chimney Rock in 1994. Then came a truly remarkable turn of events. Assistant Pastor Howard Anderson negotiated with Texas Commerce Bank. The bank donated eight modular buildings to the church. These buildings, over 6,000 square feet, were moved from Champion Forest to the Court Road property. In September 1996, New Hope Church held its first service in its new, donated home. New Hope Church joined the Southern Baptist Association in 1995. This led to a partnership with Sugar Creek Baptist Church Alliance. This alliance provided a substantial financial donation. The donation allowed New Hope to improve its parking, sanctuary seating, and overall appearance. They even added a marquee and a covered entryway. Pastor Deaver’s ultimate goal was a permanent sanctuary. In 2000, the church began planning for a new worship temple. Construction started in November 2001. The new sanctuary opened on October 6, 2002. The dedication followed on December 8, 2002. The growth continued. In 2003, Pastor Deaver envisioned a Family Life Center, a safe space for the church’s youth. Construction on this center began in 2005 and finished in 2006. It became a hub for youth services, ministry gatherings, and community events. Furthering this vision, Whispering Hope Christian Academy was founded on June 1, 2006. This academy, affiliated with New Hope Church, educated students from pre-K to ninth grade. It operated on the church campus until 2017. Pastor Deaver served New Hope Church faithfully for twenty-three years. He preached his final sermon on January 4, 2015, and passed away on January 10, 2015. His legacy lives on. The Family Life Center and a library were dedicated in his honor in 2016. Reverend Benjamin E. Price became Senior Pastor on January 1, 2016, continuing New Hope’s mission of worship, fellowship, ministry, outreach, and Christian education.
