Founded in 1922 as the First Presbyterian Church New Hope Baptist Church stands as a testament to Denver’s rich history. It’s more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community hub. It’s a place where faith hope and transformation intertwine. Originally located at 22nd and Ogden Streets New Hope Baptist Church was renamed in 1947. Just a few years later it became a central location for the Civil Rights Movement.
New Hope Baptist Church isn’t just about its past though. Under the leadership of Reverend Dr Eugene Downing Jr the church continues to serve Northeast Denver. Its ministries are diverse. They include food distribution holiday meals a summer youth camp and health and wellness programs. The church also actively engages in social justice outreach. This reflects the diverse community it serves a community where 42 percent of residents are Black 26 percent are Latino 45 percent are White and 7 percent identify as two or more races. The median age is 26 but 5 percent of residents are over 75.
A unique aspect of New Hope Baptist Church is its annual Women’s Day celebration. This event which has been held for over sixty years began in 1952. It was a time when women held few leadership roles in churches. The celebration has featured prominent speakers such as Coretta Scott King Alberta Williams King and Naomi Tutu. The celebration is much more than a service. It’s a time to celebrate women and their contributions to the church and the community. It’s a time to show how barriers are broken down even in a church setting. This tradition reflects the church’s commitment to empowerment and inclusivity.
The church’s motto speaks volumes Faith community and transformation. This motto is reflected in its mission to embody Christ’s love engage the community and embrace every generation. The vision of New Hope Baptist Church is based on 1 Thessalonians 1:3 which speaks of faith labor and hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
