In the heart of Houston, Texas, stands New Heights Baptist Church. It has been a beacon of faith for over a century. New Heights Baptist Church’s story began in 1907. Judge T.M. Kennerly and Reverend Frederich Huhns, a German immigrant pastor, rode a trolley up Heights Boulevard. Their conversation sparked a vision for a Baptist church in the burgeoning Heights area. In 1908, a small group gathered above Simon Lewis’s store on West 19th Street. They established Baptist Temple, the church that would later become New Heights Baptist Church. The church’s early years were marked by rapid growth and a commitment to serving the community, particularly German immigrants. They even housed the Heights’ first public library. New Heights Baptist Church thrived under the leadership of its fourth pastor, Dr. Thomas C. Jester. During his tenure, from 1927 to 1950, the church became one of Houston’s largest, boasting over 1,500 members. Dr. Jester’s vision for a new multistory educational building was realized posthumously, with the building being named in his honor. Today, New Heights Baptist Church continues to be a testament to faith. It stands as a vibrant reminder of the enduring power of community and the legacy of those who planted its roots.
