New Harmony Baptist Church wasn’t always here. It began humbly in 1867. Eighteen adults and a child sought a new place of worship. They chose a site twelve miles northwest of Tyler Texas. They named their church Harmony. However another church already held that name. They became New Harmony Baptist Church.
Their first church was simple a small building near what became New Harmony Cemetery. A second church followed across the road from its current location. Natural springs nearby provided water for baptisms. In 1907 they moved to their third building on the present site. A storm damaged this building in 1915. A fourth church costing just $330.35 was then built. It served the congregation for 34 years. The fifth and current building dates back to 1949. It’s seen several additions including a new sanctuary in 1993.
Through two world wars the Korean War and conflicts in Vietnam the Gulf and Iraq New Harmony Baptist Church remained a steadfast presence. They prayed for their 40 members serving in World War II.
