Stepping into the hushed reverence of New Greater Love Baptist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of history whispering from the walls. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, resilience, and the fight for equality. New Greater Love Baptist Church stands as a symbol of hope in the heart of Detroit. The church we see today wasn’t always here. New Greater Love Baptist Church’s story begins in 1932. The church’s journey reflects the dynamism and struggles of Detroit itself. Originally located at 8430 C. L. Franklin Boulevard, New Greater Love Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of the community. The charismatic Reverend C.L. Franklin became pastor in 1946. Under his leadership, the church grew exponentially. The congregation moved to a larger space on Hastings Street in 1951. They even boasted a renowned gospel choir, featuring a young Aretha Franklin. This vibrant period was cut short when the church was displaced due to freeway construction in 1961. The congregation persevered, holding services at the Gold Coast Theater before finding a new home in the former Oriole Theater. In 1963, New Greater Love Baptist Church triumphantly moved into the renovated Oriole Theater on Linwood and Philadelphia. This marked a historic moment, being the first major construction project in Detroit entirely financed and executed by the African American community. The 1960s saw New Greater Love Baptist Church become a central hub for the civil rights movement. Reverend Franklin played a key role in organizing the Detroit Walk to Freedom in 1963. The church also hosted prominent figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, further solidifying its role in the fight for equality. The church’s history isn’t without its trials. In 1969, a police raid during a Republic of New Africa convention resulted in a shootout and numerous arrests, leaving the church damaged and the community shaken. Despite setbacks, New Greater Love Baptist Church remained a steadfast beacon of hope, serving as a venue for notable funerals, weddings, and even Aretha Franklin’s 1978 wedding. Following Reverend Franklin’s passing in 1984, Reverend Robert Smith Jr. took the helm in 1982. He continues to lead the congregation, carrying on the legacy of faith and community engagement. Even today, New Greater Love Baptist Church remains an integral part of Detroit’s spiritual and social fabric.
