“Soul Saving Station” is how New Galilee Spirtual Church sees itself. The church welcomes all. It manifests God’s grace and love through its behavior.
New Galilee Missionary Baptist Church started with a vision. God sent this vision through the late James E. Reed. He was New Galilee’s first pastor. New Galilee formally organized in January 1940. The location was 545 E. Canfield. Early leaders persevered through many trials. They established and maintained the church. These leaders included Bro. Lonnie Johnson. Others were Deacon Paul Jackson and Trustee Rice. Sis R. Rice, Deacon John Avery, and Deacon Willie Prentiss also helped. Pastor Reed served for seven years. During his time, the church moved to 2124 Gratiot Avenue.
After Pastor Reed, God sent other pastors. Rev. C.L. Battle and Rev. Albert Ridgeway came. Rev. McGhee also led. In 1965, Rev. Robert L. Jones became pastor. Under his leadership, New Galilee moved. The new address was 11241 Gunston. This accommodated growing membership. Under Rev. Jones, the church paid off its mortgage in five years.
In January 1982, Rev. Grady Ridgeway became pastor. He served until 1988. In August 1989, Rev. Willie Brooks, Jr. was called. The church grew in numbers and spirit. In April 1994, Rev. Horace Sheffield, III, led New Galilee. He aimed for a higher level of community service. Many joined the church under his leadership. The vision of a new church building came true.
In August 2010, God chose Rev. Karen Gray Sheffield. She shepherded the people through challenges. She helped them become a true “Soul Saving Station”. It became a spirit-filled caring congregation. God’s love is shown through their behavior. With God’s grace, New Galilee continues to grow. It spreads the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations.
