“A library in New Farm Park? Are you sure?” That was the question on many lips when the Brisbane City Council first proposed the idea. Let’s step inside the New Farm Library.
In 1960, the council planned a library on Brunswick Street. But the project stalled for over a decade. Alderman Beattie Dawson championed the library. She faced political pressure and opposition to building in New Farm Park. Some argued the park was zoned for open space. The council even started building, saying it could be used for any legal purpose, hoping it would become the library.
MLA Russ Hinze broke the deadlock. He amended the Town Plan. The library was approved on May 24, 1975. Alderman Dawson invited residents to the opening on October 18, 1975. The New Farm Library opened the following Monday.
The New Farm Library quickly became a community hub. It offered books, multimedia, and local information. Alderman David Hinchliffe organized a local history walk. This led to the New Farm and Districts Historical Society. The society met in the library for many years. Beattie Dawson was honored with life membership.
The New Farm Library provided many community services. Library staff started a Reconciliation Group. They participated in St Joseph’s Day festivals. The library catered to the community’s needs. It offered free internet and literary events. A gay and lesbian collection was developed. The New Farm Library became a cherished local institution.
In 2001, the Ron Muir Room opened. This meeting hall provided a valuable space for community groups. The Historical Society had an office there. They offered consultations every Thursday afternoon.
The New Farm Library Validation Act passed in May 1975. The library was designed with open access in mind. It featured a sloping path for people with disabilities.
In 1994, a community mosaic was added to the library’s side wall. Kez van Oudheusden designed it.
A major refurbishment took place in 2018. The garden room became a community reading space. A programs room and children’s area were added. An outdoor covered deck was built.
Today, the New Farm Library offers many free services. It hosts activities and events. The library has Chinese and Italian collections. It continues to house a LGBTIQ+ collection.
The New Farm Library stands as a testament to community spirit. It overcame political hurdles and environmental concerns. It provides knowledge, resources, and a gathering place for all. From a rocky start to a beloved institution, the New Farm Library enriches the lives of its members.
