In 1937, New Dorp High School first opened its doors. It stood proudly on Clawson Street. The building echoed the classic New York City public school design of that era. Long brick facades gave it an institutional feel. Some even mistook it for a hospital or prison. New Dorp High School, or NDHS as it’s often called, wasn’t always at its current location. The burgeoning local population demanded a larger space. So, in 1982, New Dorp High School moved to its current home on New Dorp Lane, right next to Miller Field. This former army airport, now a park, stretches all the way to the Lower New York Bay. The original Clawson Street building didn’t go to waste. It became home to Ralph R. McKee Vocational and Technical High School’s engineering program. This program eventually blossomed into the Staten Island Technical High School in 1988. New Dorp High School has always been a hub of activity. It boasts a rich history of diverse programs. From the bygone days of the classical guitar ensemble and marching band, to the current excitement of the SING Musical Theater competition and the annual Spring Musical, there’s always something happening. Students gather around the “Hari IV” sculpture at the main entrance. This 32-foot aluminum giant, created by Bill Barrett, often gets mistaken for an elephant. It’s a beloved spot on campus. The New York Times even praised it as “one of the most successful public sculptures in the city.” New Dorp High School has a special connection to the silver screen. In 2015, scenes from the movie “Nerve,” starring Emma Roberts, were filmed right here in the school and on its football field. Inside these walls, students are divided into “Houses,” or Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs). These specialized programs offer a focused learning experience. Students can choose from a wide range of options. From the Law Institute and AFJROTC Program, to the Academy of Fine & Dramatic Arts, there’s a path for every passion. New Dorp High School also emphasizes strong essay-writing skills. The Atlantic magazine even highlighted the school’s effectiveness in this area. New Dorp High School’s alumni have made their mark in diverse fields. From musicians like Eric Blackwood to politicians like Nicole Malliotakis, and even rappers like Inspectah Deck, Method Man, and Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, NDHS graduates have achieved remarkable things. New Dorp High School stands as a testament to the power of education and community.
