Dr. Hyacinth Bobb Grannum’s legacy resonates within the walls of New Covenant Church of Philadelphia. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to a woman’s unwavering faith and dedication. New Covenant Church stands as a beacon of hope on Germantown Avenue. It was established in 1982 by Dr. Grannum and her husband, Reverend C. Milton Grannum. Dr. Grannum, affectionately known as Pastor Hyacinth, poured her heart and soul into this community. She wasn’t just a pastor. She was a mentor, a leader, and a source of inspiration for countless individuals. Born in St. Vincent, her journey brought her to Philadelphia. Here, she not only co-founded New Covenant Church but also left an indelible mark on the city. Under her stewardship, the church flourished. New Covenant Church acquired a sprawling 42-acre campus. They organized vacation Bible schools that touched the lives of children throughout Philadelphia. They even built a 56-unit senior housing facility, demonstrating their commitment to serving the community. Her influence extended far beyond Philadelphia, reaching countries like the United Kingdom, South Africa, and South Korea. Her ministry touched lives across the globe, from the Cayman Islands to Kenya. Back in Philadelphia, she co-founded Women in Covenant with her friend, the late Rev. Dr. Eve Fenton. This ministry empowered thousands of women. She also championed education, supporting the United Negro College Fund’s “Women of Faith for Education Afternoon Tea”. She even received the prestigious “Keeper of the Flame” award, later renamed in her honor. New Covenant Church is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of Dr. Hyacinth Bobb Grannum. Her legacy lives on in the vibrant community she helped create.
