In November 1971, a seed of faith was planted in Detroit. Driven by Pastor Lorris Upshaw Sr., New Christ Temple Church of God in Christ began its journey. New Christ Temple Church of God in Christ wasn’t built in a day. It started near Van Dyke and Harper. Pastor Upshaw initially found nothing there. He returned home, only to fall mysteriously ill. After 29 days in the hospital, he was discharged with no clear diagnosis. He immediately returned to the spot near Van Dyke and Harper. This time, a small building appeared. Pastor Upshaw, seeing God’s hand, began renovations, preparing to open Christ Temple COGIC. The congregation grew through prayer and fasting. The small building pulsed with the Holy Spirit. Miracles happened. Lives were transformed. The sick were healed. Years passed. God gave Pastor Upshaw another vision: a new edifice. The message was clear, “What you do, do quickly.” Trusting in their faith, Pastor Upshaw and the congregation acquired a beautiful building at 10001 Hayes at Promenade in 1979. Christ Temple COGIC was reborn as New Christ Temple Church of God in Christ. The next two decades were a testament to the church’s growth and community impact. New Christ Temple Church of God in Christ became more than just a building. It became a beacon of hope on Detroit’s northeast side. The work of Pastor Lorris Upshaw Sr. and his wife, Evangelist Nellie Upshaw, laid a foundation for the church’s continued growth and influence in the community. Their legacy continues to inspire New Christ Temple Church of God in Christ.
