Fifty-eight years. That’s how long ago the New Canaan Baptist Church first opened its doors. Right here on this very spot in Detroit. Can you imagine?
The New Canaan Baptist Church wasn’t always this grand building. It began humbly in the home of Deacon Emmanuel Jones in 1958. A small group of families. The Amblers Joneses Williamses and Dudleys. They held services in their own homes. They shared their faith in the intimate setting of their living rooms. They dreamed of a place to truly gather.
Their perseverance paid off. On Mother’s Day 1958 they held their first official service. It was a powerful moment. They marched into a building on St Antoine and Leland Streets. Pastor Ambler preached a sermon titled “Two Mothers”. The scripture was 1 Kings 3:16. This small act of faith ignited a movement. The congregation grew from a handful to thirty-five.
The church moved several times. Growing with the community it served. In 1962 they bought their first building at Charlevoix and Holcomb Streets. Tragedy struck in 1969 when their beloved Pastor Ambler passed away. But the church persevered. They appointed new pastors. The church continued to grow and thrive.
In 1978 they erected a beautiful new structure. This is the building we stand before today. A testament to faith perseverance and community. In 2002 they added classrooms a fellowship hall and a commercial kitchen. A gated parking lot ensures safety and convenience for worshippers.
The New Canaan Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a beacon of hope. A pillar of the community. It’s a place where faith is nurtured and connections are forged. Reverend Sylvester Sartin Jr and First Lady Shirley Sartin continue the legacy today. They lead a church with over thirty active ministries. They welcome all who seek spiritual guidance and fellowship.
Look around you. Feel the weight of history and the warmth of community. The New Canaan Baptist Church stands as a reminder of the power of faith the strength of community and the enduring spirit of Detroit itself.
