Tucked away in a quiet residential area of Southwest Houston, the New Buddhist Temple offers a surprising contrast to the bustling city just beyond its walls. The New Buddhist Temple, also known as the Jade Buddha Temple, sits near the vibrant Houston Chinatown. The temple complex encompasses several structures, including the Grand Hall, the Youth Activity Center, and Kwan-Yin Hall. A centerpiece of the grounds is a serene lotus pond, watched over by a statue of Kwan-Yin. The New Buddhist Temple embraces a traditional Chinese courtyard design. Individual buildings are arranged around a square, incorporating a peaceful garden and another smaller statue of Kwan-Yin. Each room within the New Buddhist Temple serves a distinct purpose. Visitors can explore living quarters, a library stocked with Buddhist literature in both Chinese and English, a cafeteria, classrooms, and various rooms for study and meetings. The courtyard truly comes alive on Sundays and during special events. The sangha, or Buddhist community, gathers after Dharma talks, filling the space with lively conversation and connection. But the New Buddhist Temple also offers a refuge during the week. From 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, the temple transforms into a tranquil oasis. Visitors are welcome to meditate, either outside amidst the peaceful gardens or inside the serene Kwan-Yin Hall. Inside Kwan-Yin Hall, the English Dharma Group holds its meetings. Before entering, visitors are asked to remove their shoes and place them on the shelves provided in the foyer. These shelves also hold a treasure trove of information about upcoming events, programs, and other temple activities. Flyers and books are available, offered as a courtesy of the English Dharma Group. Donations are welcomed as a way to express gratitude, and a donation box is available within Kwan-Yin Hall. If meditation is already in progress upon arrival, it’s requested that visitors enter quietly to avoid disturbing others. Benches and cushions are provided, allowing individuals to find the most comfortable position for their practice. After the Sunday Dharma talks, the New Buddhist Temple offers a delicious Chinese vegetarian lunch. Prepared fresh each Sunday morning by a skilled chef and a team of volunteers, the lunch provides a wonderful opportunity for socializing and community building. The cost is $7.00, and visitors are welcome to take a meal home for dinner. First-time visitors to the New Buddhist Temple are treated to a complimentary lunch.
