The New Bright Star Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit Michigan has a rich history. It began as the Salem Baptist Church in 1962. Elder Willie L Strayhorn became its pastor. The church was small. It struggled financially. It only had about ten members. They met in a tiny storefront on Vine Street. Even the furniture belonged to the previous pastor.

But God had a plan. In 1963 the Lord instructed Elder Strayhorn to change the name and relocate. The church became the Bright Star Baptist Church. They moved to a larger space on Findlay Street. This was a former grocery store. It needed a lot of work. Church members cleaned painted and repaired.

Their vision grew. One day Elder Strayhorn saw a building for sale on Linn Street. He felt God telling him this would be their new home. The building was dilapidated. Church members initially protested. But Mother Alfreda Green had faith. She declared that a little paint and some nails could work miracles. Deacon Brantley agreed. On February 15 1967 they acquired 809 Charlotte Street.

They worked tirelessly. They repaired the roof added support beams and removed tons of coal cinders and ashes. They installed new windows electricity plumbing and flooring. On April 7 1967 they moved into their new church home. The dedication was joyous.

The New Bright Star Missionary Baptist Church continued to grow. They acquired new Bibles hymnals pews pianos and organs. This church truly embodies the spirit of Detroit.
