Regarding the New Apostolich. Have you ever paused to consider the twists and turns within religious history? A history marked by disputes and resolutions.

Let’s explore the story of the New Apostolich. It is a tale that involves court cases and shifting identities. This church’s origins trace back to Germany in 1830. The first South African branch appeared in 1892.

Initially, a central body known as the Apostle College governed the church. It comprised Apostles and assistant Apostles. The Head Apostle, H. Niehaus, presided over this body. Carl George Klibbe became the head of the South African branch in 1908. He held the rank of Apostle.

However, a dispute arose. In 1913, Klibbe was removed from his office. George Hendrik Wilhelm Schlaphoff was appointed as Apostle for Africa. Klibbe refused to accept this change. He wouldn’t vacate his office.

His defiance led to excommunication in 1915. Klibbe’s actions caused a significant rift. This rift led to a court case. The case aimed to settle the leadership dispute within the New Apostolich in Africa.

The Rand Daily Mail reported on this legal battle in September 1926. The article highlighted the dispute. It focused on Christiaan Hendrik Kreunen and Rev. George W. Schlaphofff. They were the plaintiffs against Carl George Klibbe.

The court eventually reached a settlement. A section of the church under Klibbe severed ties with the New Apostolich in Germany in 1915. Klibbe’s group declared its independence. The settlement required Klibbe to abandon the name New Apostolich Church of Africa. He and his followers adopted the name Old Apostolic Church of Africa. This change took effect from June 1, 1927.

Schlaphoff was recognized as the African Apostle. He led the New Apostolich Church. Both organizations could manage their own affairs. They did so without interference from each other.

Yet, the story doesn’t end there. Another article appeared in the Rand Daily Mail in December 1926. This later article retracted some earlier statements. It clarified the position of the parties involved.

The defendants, led by Klibbe, maintained their independence. They were not subject to the jurisdiction of the church in Germany. Klibbe remained the Apostle. He led the church he established in South Africa in 1892. His church retained its property and membership. It simply changed its name to the Old Apostolic Church of Africa.

These events highlight a complex chapter in the history. This chapter involves the New Apostolich in South Africa. It shows the challenges of leadership and the consequences of theological disagreements. The story of Klibbe and Schlaphoff serves as a reminder of the human element within religious institutions. Their dispute shaped the religious landscape of South Africa. It led to the formation of distinct Apostolic churches. Each with its own identity and path.

So, as we stand here today, remember the layers of history. The history that has shaped this place. A history of faith, conflict and resolution. It’s a story that continues to unfold with each passing day.
