“A church built on a firewood depot? Now that’s something you don’t hear every day!” The New Apostolic Church in Brisbane has a history as unique as its origin story. This beautiful church, nestled on Lutwyche Road, wasn’t always a place of worship. It actually started its life as a humble firewood depot. Back in the 1920s, the New Apostolic community in Brisbane was small but growing. They held their services in homes, then a Labour Hall, and even the Windsor School of Arts. By 1935, the community realized they needed a dedicated space, a place to call their own. They set their sights on the firewood depot on 437 Lutwyche Road. Tenders were called, plans were drawn, and in a testament to their dedication, the church was dedicated on January 5th, 1936. The Windsor Congregation, as it’s known, became a beacon, inspiring the growth of numerous other congregations in southeast Queensland. The church has seen its own share of transformations over the years. The interior, once exposed studs, was lined with grained masonite. The original spire was taken down in 1966. Modern amenities like toilets and storage space were added in 1983. They even upgraded the entrance, installed a new altar, and welcomed the modern comfort of air conditioning. Today, the New Apostolic Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. It’s a place where the echoes of hymns blend with the whispers of history, a place where a simple firewood depot was transformed into a beacon of hope.
