“A planned residential area they said” I overheard two women gossiping near the New Alipore railway station. New Alipore a planned suburb of Kolkata. It wasn’t always this way.

Picture this the 1950s. Kolkata’s population exploded. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority needed a solution. They decided to create a new residential area. A planned escape from the bustling city center. That’s how New Alipore was born.

But New Alipore wasn’t empty land. The India Government Mint stood here already. A silent witness to the changes. Built in the 1930s it stamped its history onto the very soil of New Alipore. Nearby the Centenary Port Trust Hospital opened its doors in 1971. More than just a place for healing it became another vital part of the community.

New Alipore grew rapidly. Homes rose alongside institutions. New Alipore College opened its doors in 1963. It quickly became a hub of learning. Students flocked to its classrooms. Their voices adding to the growing symphony of New Alipore life.

New Alipore’s transport links also boomed. Two railway stations the New Alipore railway station and the Majerhat railway station connected it to the rest of Kolkata. Buses crisscrossed its streets. Diamond Harbour Road now part of NH 117 became its main artery. But that wasn’t always the case. The Kalighat Falta Railway once snaked through this area. Now replaced by James Long Sarani a road that echoes with stories of a bygone era.

The area thrived with various institutions like the New Alipore Multipurpose School. It stands proudly today a testament to New Alipore’s ambition. The police too have a presence here. The New Alipore Police Station provides security and order. Close by the Tollygunge Women’s police station oversees all the police districts in the South Division.

Today New Alipore stands as a posh residential area. A blend of history and modernity. It is a testament to careful planning and a visionary approach to urban development. A planned community that transformed a part of Kolkata into a thriving residential area. A story woven into the very fabric of its streets. It’s more than just houses and roads. It is a neighborhood with a history a soul.
