Did Nevsky District always straddle the Neva River? No. Nevsky District, a unique district in St. Petersburg, is the only one that lies on both banks of the Neva River. Established in 1917, Nevsky District has seen its population grow over the years. The 2010 census showed a population of 466,013, a significant increase from the 438,061 recorded in the 2002 census. Nevsky District is bordered by several other districts and regions. To the north, it shares a border with Krasnogvardeysky and Tsentralny Districts. To the east, it borders the Vsevolozhsky District of Leningrad Oblast. Its southeastern border touches the Kolpinsky District. Finally, to the west lies the Frunzensky District. The history of Nevsky District is intertwined with the history of St. Petersburg itself. As the city evolved, so did Nevsky District, growing in population and importance. It remains a vital part of St. Petersburg’s urban fabric.
