Envision a home that breathes, a structure so attuned to its surroundings that it seems to reflect the very essence of Silver Lake. This is the Neutra Studio and Residences, also known as the VDL Research House. Richard Neutra, a visionary architect, built this innovative home for his family in 1932. The “VDL” comes from Cees H. Van der Leeuw, a Dutch industrialist whose loan made the project possible. Neutra Studio and Residences wasn’t just a home. It was a laboratory for Neutra’s architectural ideas, a place where he explored the interplay of light, space, and nature. The original Neutra Studio and Residences, sadly, fell victim to a devastating fire in 1963. Countless sketches, writings, and Neutra’s architectural library were lost. However, like a phoenix from the ashes, the house was reborn in 1964. Neutra’s son, Dion, oversaw the reconstruction. While the original footprint remained, the new Neutra Studio and Residences incorporated modern elements. These included expanded glass planes and reflecting pools of water. These created an even more transparent and ethereal atmosphere. Neutra designed the VDL Research House to prove that innovative design, like that seen in his Lovell Health House, could be accessible to everyone. He maximized natural light, incorporated glass walls that opened onto patio gardens, and used mirrors to create a sense of spaciousness. The house reflected the tranquil beauty of nearby Silver Lake. Neutra’s vision was to create a high-density living space that felt humane and private. He wanted a place where families could thrive in close proximity without sacrificing their individual needs. The Neutra Studio and Residences, with its carefully planned zones and abundant plantings, was a testament to his philosophy. The house became a magnet for architects, artists, and intellectuals. Luminaries like Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, and Charles and Ray Eames visited this hub of creativity. Today, the Neutra Studio and Residences is owned by Cal Poly Pomona. It stands as a tribute to Richard Neutra’s genius. The house offers a glimpse into a time when architecture was not just about building structures, but about creating spaces that nurtured the human spirit. It continues to inspire architects and design enthusiasts.
