Once a vital part of Osnabrück’s city defenses, the Neustädter Turm stood guard. Construction began sometime in the 13th or 14th century. Over time it has collected a few nicknames.
People called it the “Plümersturm”. Others knew it as “Schweineturm”. Some even referred to it as “Mäuseturm”. But, the name “Gesperrter Turm” is very common these days.

During wartime, its role shifted. The Neustädter Turm became a protective bunker. Concrete walls over a meter thick were added. They were meant to shield people inside.
After the war, the bunker needed dismantling. From 1980 to 1984, crews worked hard to remove the concrete. The THW, a German organization, tried to burn holes using an oxygen lance. They succeeded in making a hole. An Osnabrück demolition company broke the ceiling piece by piece with explosives.
Today, the Neustädter Turm stands as a reminder. It reminds us of Osnabrück’s resilience. It has stood through sieges and wars. It has always been a steadfast structure.
