Behold Neues Schloss Meersburg a majestic Baroque masterpiece. Its story unfolds before you a testament to centuries of power and transformation.
Construction began in 1710 under Bishop Johann Franz II von Stauffenberg. Christoph Gessinger designed this ambitious project. It was completed in 1712. The upper story held apartments for visiting nobles. However a grand staircase was absent. This unfinished state symbolized the Bishop’s power a subtle yet effective message.
Hugo Damian von Schönborn Bishop of Speyer arrived in 1740. He greatly improved the Neues Schloss. He brought Johann Georg Stahl a master builder. Stahl added a stunning staircase following plans by Balthasar Neumann. The castle became more impressive and elegant.
Between 1741 and 1743 a magnificent chapel was added also based on Neumann’s designs. Gottfried Bernhard Göz and Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer created the stunning art and statues. Their work continues to amaze visitors.
By 1759 Prince-Bishop Cardinal Franz Konrad von Rodt oversaw renovations. Franz Anton Bagnatos led these changes. The old staircase was restored. The Baroque facade was updated in the Rococo style. Enlarged windows and added decoration enhanced its beauty.
Giuseppe Appiani a Mainz artist and Carlo Luca Pozzi a sculptor decorated the interior. Appiani painted two enormous canvases. One above the grand staircase depicts the Glorification of the Prince-Bishops and the Diocese. The other above the ballroom shows The Worship of Divine Providence. These masterpieces are highlights of the Neues Schloss.
For about fifty years Neues Schloss served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Constance. Secularization in 1803 ended this era.
The 19th century saw many uses for the castle. It was a girls school a prison a sailors school and a school for the deaf. After World War II it housed French troops.
Today Neues Schloss houses several museums. The Town Gallery and the Dornier Museum occupy the second floor. The Palace Museum of the Prince Bishops is on the third. It showcases the prince-bishops’ lavish living spaces.
This hilltop castle offers breathtaking views. Look out across the garden terrace. You can see the lower city the ferry port and even the Swiss shore of Lake Constance. A large plaza the Schlossplatz is on the city side. A clock featuring Chronos the god of time adorns the facade. This impressive clock stands in the middle of the Schloss’s Rococo facade.
