“Ever wondered where Greifswald’s maritime heart truly beats?” I ask you. Here at the Neues Bootshaus Wieck, the spirit of the sea is alive.

The Neues Bootshaus Wieck is more than just a building. It is a vital part of Greifswald’s historic fishing village, Wieck. This village, about 5 km outside the city center, sits where the Ryck River meets the Greifswalder Bodden. Wieck, almost 800 years old, has kept its maritime charm.

Since 1939, Wieck has been part of Greifswald. This area, with its distinct atmosphere, makes you feel like time slows down.

Imagine the scene: traditional thatched-roof cottages line the streets. Fishing boats gently sway in the harbor. Cozy seafood restaurants dot the promenade. This is Wieck. The Neues Bootshaus Wieck fits perfectly into this idyllic picture.

The University’s sailing center calls the Neues Bootshaus Wieck home. You will find it at Yachtweg 2.

Wieck’s fishing culture is deeply rooted. Fishing boats and nets characterize the village. For centuries, fishermen have harvested the Bodden’s bounty. The day’s catch is often smoked and served in local restaurants.

One of Wieck’s landmarks is the Dutch-style drawbridge built in 1887. This bridge is still manually operated. It allows ships to pass. From the bridge, you can see the harbor and the Greifswalder Bodden. Many consider it the most beautiful sailing area between Rügen and Usedom. Yachts and the city’s sailing training ship, the Greif, are moored here.

Low, thatched-roof cottages from the 18th and 19th centuries line the narrow streets. Along the promenade, you’ll find wooden sculptures by international and local artists. Historical brick captain’s houses and the old customs house stand proudly on the Ryck embankment. The harbor office is also located here.

Two markers near the entrance show the high water levels of the storm floods of 1872 and 1995. Since 2016, a barrier protects the city from floods.

Every year, Wieck hosts the Gaffelrigg fishing festival, the largest maritime folk festival in Western Pomerania. The village comes alive with traditional sailing ships. The Ryck River seems to burst into flames with celebratory lights.

The Neues Bootshaus Wieck is part of a living, breathing history. It is a place where tradition and the spirit of the sea meet. As you stand here, you are connected to centuries of maritime heritage.
