“Is it a stream, a river, or a ‘Fließ’?” a curious voice piped up from the group. We are standing at the edge of the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ, and that’s a very good question. The Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ is a 32-kilometer waterway that meanders through Brandenburg and Berlin. It’s actually part of the longer Erpe River, taking on different names as it flows. Upstream from Hoppegarten, it’s known as the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ. This section of the river holds a special place in Berlin’s natural landscape. The Erpetal, the valley carved by the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ and Erpe, is one of the few remaining “Fließtäler,” or stream valleys, in the city. Imagine a ribbon of green winding through the urban landscape. That’s the Erpetal, a testament to a time before concrete and steel dominated the scene. The Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ isn’t just a pretty sight. It tells a story of human intervention and adaptation. Back in the Middle Ages, people reshaped the naturally meandering Erpe River, creating the faster-flowing Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ. This was done to power watermills along its banks, a testament to human ingenuity. Several of these mills dotted the landscape, including the Ravensteiner Mühle, Heidemühle, Krummendammer Mühle, and the Neuenhagener Mühle itself. Traces of these mills and their industrious past can still be found along the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ, adding another layer to the story of this unique waterway. Sadly, the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ, like many urban waterways, faces challenges. Discharges from the Münchehofe wastewater treatment plant impact its ecological health. Efforts are underway to restore the river’s ecological balance and ensure its survival for generations to come. This commitment to preservation means that the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ will continue to be a vital part of Berlin’s natural heritage. The unique landscape of the Erpetal, cradling the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ, became a protected area in 1957. A portion received even stricter protection as a nature reserve in 2003. So, as you stand here, appreciating the gentle flow of the Neuenhagener Mühlenfließ, remember you are witnessing a story of natural beauty, human adaptation, and ongoing efforts at preservation.
