Gazing at the Neuengammer Stichkanal, can you sense the weight of its history? This seemingly tranquil waterway holds within its banks a chilling narrative, deeply intertwined with the dark chapter of Neuengamme concentration camp. The Neuengammer Stichkanal, more than just a canal, served as a lifeline for the SS’s brutal enterprise during World War II. Originally an offshoot of the Elbe River, the Neuengammer Stichkanal wasn’t always so wide. It was painstakingly expanded and deepened by the very prisoners of Neuengamme. Imagine thousands of prisoners, forced into grueling labor, excavating the heavy soil by hand. They widened the canal to 28 meters and deepened it by 2 meters, creating a navigable route for barges to transport materials to the camp’s brick factory. This seemingly mundane task, under the watchful eye of the SS, became another instrument of extermination. The construction, completed in 1942, allowed for an increase in brick production to fuel Hamburg’s ambitious construction plans under the Nazi regime. The Neuengammer Stichkanal became a chilling symbol of exploitation, a vital link in the chain of forced labor and suffering that characterized the Neuengamme camp. The canal even features two massive pillars, erected midway between the Dove Elbe and the brick factory’s harbor basin, a grim reminder of the control exerted over the prisoners. This construction was initially agreed upon between the city of Hamburg and the SS. Later, the SS company DESt took over the project, with Hamburg covering the costs. The Neuengammer Stichkanal, therefore, wasn’t merely a construction project; it was a monument to forced labor, etched into the landscape by the suffering of thousands. Today, as you stand by the Neuengammer Stichkanal, remember the lives tragically intertwined with its creation.
