The Erfurt Neue Synagoge stands before you a testament to resilience. Its unassuming beige facade belies a powerful history. Built in 1952 after the destruction of its predecessor the Neue Synagoge is unique. It is one of only two synagogues built in East Germany during the communist era. This simple two-story building serves as a place of worship for the Thuringian Jewish community. Around 850 members call this their spiritual home.

Before this structure stood the imposing Große Synagoge. Sadly it was destroyed in 1938 a victim of the Nazis’ horrific Kristallnacht pogroms. The site however remained significant. The Jewish community tirelessly sought its return. Finally in 1947 the land was restored to them. The Neue Synagoge then became a symbol of hope and rebirth.

Architect Willy Nöckel designed the building. His initial plans were deemed too grand too overtly religious for the time. The final design a more subdued structure was approved. The Neue Synagoge opened on August 31 1952. It was a momentous occasion. A beacon in a world still scarred by unimaginable loss.

Tragedy struck again. In April 2000 right-wing extremists attacked the Neue Synagoge setting it ablaze. The perpetrators were swiftly apprehended and punished. More recently in November 2023 another arson attack occurred. This time it was committed by two Libyan asylum seekers. Sadly they were released soon after. These events highlight the ongoing struggle against antisemitism. It serves as a chilling reminder of the fragility of peace and tolerance.

The square in front of the Neue Synagoge is named Max-Cars-Platz. Max Cars was the first chairman of the Thuringian Jewish community after the Second World War. His name permanently honors his contributions. Since 2021 inside the Neue Synagoge a remarkable feature exists. Using virtual reality technology visitors can explore a 3D model of the lost Große Synagoge. It is a poignant and powerful experience. This allows them to step back in time and witness its former glory.

The Neue Synagoge is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Jewish community in Erfurt. It stands as a reminder that even amidst destruction hope can endure and faith can be rebuilt. It is a place of worship yes but also a place of memory a place of learning and a place of hope for the future.
