Fifty-seven meters. That’s the impressive span of the Neue Späthbrücke. Right before us stands this elegant steel arch bridge a modern marvel in Berlin-Britz.

The Neue Späthbrücke is more than just a crossing over the Teltowkanal. It represents a fascinating chapter in Berlin’s urban development. Its construction in 2002 marked a significant shift. It replaced an older Späthstraßenbrücke built in 1906. This older bridge was a riveted steel truss bridge a testament to earlier engineering. Interestingly it was the only Teltowkanal bridge spared from destruction during World War II.

The new bridge’s creation necessitated a major realignment of Späthstraße. It had to be moved about 700 meters north. This was necessary to connect the street to the A 113 motorway which runs parallel to the canal. The old Späthstraße bridge now stands as a historical landmark though no longer used for traffic. It’s a silent witness to the city’s transformation. A reminder of times past.

Imagine the bustling activity that once flowed across this older bridge connecting the districts of Britz and Baumschulenweg. Now a quiet stillness hangs in the air. Yet the legacy of Franz Ludwig Späth lives on. Both bridges bear his name a tribute to this botanist.

The Neue Späthbrücke is a symbol of modern engineering and urban planning. It efficiently connects modern Berlin. It quietly coexists with a piece of Berlin’s history. This juxtaposition tells a powerful story. A story of progress and preservation. A story beautifully reflected in the two Späthbrücken. We stand here at the intersection of past and present. The future stretches out before us. Just like the road over the Neue Späthbrücke.
