Picture the churning of water. Feel the rhythmic splash against ancient stones. You stand before the Neue Mühle in Erfurt a testament to centuries of milling history. This isn’t just any mill. It’s the last functioning mill of sixty that once graced this city. Imagine the bustling activity here over the years.

The Neue Mühle’s story is one of resilience. Its location on the Gera River a vital artery for the city’s watermills provided the power for its operation for hundreds of years. It didn’t always bear this name though. Throughout its history it went by many names such as the Hirschmühle Martinsmühle and even the Grafenmühle hinting at its noble past. Records date its existence back to the 13th century. A 1332 document illustrates the importance of water rights for the city’s many mills. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the legal and societal aspects of milling in medieval Erfurt.

Tragedy struck in 1736. A devastating fire destroyed the mill and seventy nearby houses near the Predigerkloster. But from the ashes rose a new mill. Rebuilt in 1737 under the ownership of Kammerrat Moliton and Reichs- und Hofrat Clemens it gained the name Neue Mühle meaning “New Mill”. Over the years various owners modernized the mill. Carl Köhler for instance added roller mills making it a “Kunstmühle” or art mill for a time. The Gruhn family owned it until 1982 playing a crucial role in preserving its authenticity. The last miller Heinrich Gruhn ensured that the mill remained fully functional right up to the end of the 19th century.

The Neue Mühle survived World War II despite sustaining damage from bombing raids. Post-war reconstruction under the Gruhn family involved interesting additions. A Francisturbine and an electric motor joined the original water wheel showcasing adaptation to changing technology. Even a diesel motor served as a backup power source.

The Neue Mühle’s story doesn’t end there. In 1992 it reopened as a museum a vibrant reminder of Erfurt’s milling legacy. A remarkable feat considering the challenges of the 20th century. The reinstallation of the water wheel in 1996 even generated electricity an example of innovative sustainability. The Neue Mühle stands as a symbol of Erfurt’s ingenuity. Its continuous operation for over seven centuries is an exceptional story of resilience innovation and enduring heritage.
