A dazzling golden portrait beckons you. This is the Neue Galerie New York. Welcome to a world of early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design.

The Neue Galerie isn’t just a museum it’s a story. A story of two friends Ronald S Lauder and Serge Sabarsky. They shared a passion for this unique art. In 1994 they purchased this Beaux-Arts mansion. Their dream was to create a haven for these masterpieces. The museum opened in 2001. It quickly became a beloved New York institution.

This stunning building was once home to Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt III. It’s a designated New York landmark. The Neue Galerie occupies all six floors. It’s more than just a collection of art. It’s an experience. You can explore six floors of stunning art and design. You can also enjoy a delicious meal at Caf Sabarsky. This Viennese-style restaurant is on the ground floor. You will also find a Design Shop and a bookstore specializing in art architecture and decorative arts from Germany and Austria.

Upstairs you’ll find Austrian art. The works of Klimt Kokoschka and Schiele are featured. The Neue Galerie boasts more than two hundred works by Schiele. In 2006 Lauder purchased Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. He paid a record-breaking $135 million. This acquisition alone cemented the Neue Galerie’s status.

The third floor showcases early twentieth-century German art. The Blaue Reiter movement is represented. Kandinsky and Klee are among the artists. The Brücke movement is also here with Kirchner. You’ll also find examples of Neue Sachlichkeit by Dix and Grosz. Works by important Werkbund and Bauhaus designers complete the collection. The decorative objects are exquisite examples of the Wiener Werkstätte. This includes pieces by Hoffmann Moser and Peche. There are also designs by Loos and Wagner.
