Standing before you, a testament to faith and architectural resilience, is the Neuapostolische Kirche Moselstraße. This church, a cornerstone of the New Apostolic faith in Mannheim, has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, standing as a beacon of hope in the heart of the Neckarstadt-Ost district. Built in 1930, in the style of New Objectivity, it boasts a unique design characterized by three cubes of varying heights. The southern part houses apartments, seamlessly blending the church with the surrounding five-story residential buildings. Connecting the residential section to the church is a 22-meter-high staircase tower, a striking architectural feature with a continuous vertical window band that accentuates its facade.

While the exterior exhibits this distinctive architectural style, the interior is equally captivating. The long sides of the church feature three large rectangular windows, all illuminating the space with natural light, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere. Originally, an additional window graced the apse, but it was concealed by the organ in 1995. The light-colored artificial stone blocks and flat roofs complement the church’s New Objectivity style, making it an aesthetically pleasing structure.

The story of the Neuapostolische Kirche Moselstraße traces back to 1900, its roots woven with the emergence of the New Apostolic community in Mannheim. It began with a small congregation meeting in homes, then transitioning to rented spaces in the Jungbusch district. Later, the church found temporary refuge in the Aula of the Realgymnasium in the Oststadt. The desire for a permanent presence in Mannheim led to the groundbreaking of its own church in 1929. This groundbreaking took place amidst a financially challenging period, the Great Depression, which threatened to stall construction. However, the Kirchenbezirk (church district) of Württemberg came to the rescue, providing the necessary funds to complete the church.

During World War II, the Neuapostolische Kirche was fortunate to escape severe damage, allowing it to continue serving the community, even amidst the war’s devastation. The post-war era saw the church’s congregation grow, fueled in part by those who had fled to Mannheim from eastern Europe. This growth gave birth to new congregations in surrounding neighborhoods, further solidifying the church’s presence in the city. In 1974, significant renovations took place, and again in 1994-95, the church underwent a thorough transformation. This striking edifice, with its rich history and unwavering faith, continues to stand tall, as a testament to the enduring spirit of the New Apostolic community in Mannheim.
