“An unhappy schism and controversy” once threatened the Dutch Churches. Today, we stand before the Netherland Reformed Congregation in New York City. Its roots run deep into the history of Dutch influence in America. The Dutch Reformed Church played a significant role. It helped shape the religious landscape of New York.

The Dutch Reformed Church’s story began in the 16th century. Many Christians in the Netherlands broke away from the Roman Catholic Church. They embraced Calvinist Protestantism. This led to the formation of the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk. It is also known as the Dutch Reformed Church.

Many leaders in the Dutch fight for independence were part of this church. Also, directors of the West India Company were members. This company founded the colony of New Netherland. The Dutch Reformed Church was very important in early colonial New York. Its records are valuable for tracing family history.

In New Amsterdam, before the English took over in 1664, only the Dutch Reformed Church could hold public worship. Everyone seeking to marry or baptize their children went to the Dutch minister. Even if your ancestors weren’t Dutch, these records might hold clues if they lived nearby. The early Dutch Reformed records are detailed making them a key resource for genealogy.

The first Dutch Reformed services were held on Manhattan Island in 1628. Jonas Michaelius led this initial group at Fort Amsterdam. Today, this congregation still exists. It is now known as the Collegiate Church of New York City. Though active since 1628, records begin in 1639. The church wasn’t built until 1642. This church holds the oldest religious marriage record in New York.

More Dutch Reformed churches appeared as the colony expanded in the 1700s. Several congregations formed in southern Manhattan. They were connected and shared ministers. They kept one set of registers. A church also existed in Harlem from 1660. Aside from these, few other Dutch Reformed churches existed in the city until the 1800s. Many new Dutch Reformed churches were founded in the 1800s and 1900s. Most were not connected to each other. Fortunately, many of their records have been saved.

Many settlers in New Amsterdam in the 1600s came from Germany. They included members of German Reformed churches. They joined the Dutch population and the Dutch Reformed Church. In the 1700s, more Germans came to New York. Those who were Reformed continued to attend the Dutch churches. As the German population grew, they wanted church services in German. In 1758, the German Reformed Church in the City of New York was founded.

The Dutch Reformed Church in America officially became independent in 1792. It is now known as the Reformed Church in America. Later, some churches left because of disagreements over theology. They formed the True Dutch Reformed Church.

Back in the Netherlands, things were changing. King William I reorganized the churches into a state church. He called it the Netherlands Reformed Church. This caused unrest among believers. Some ministers immigrated to the United States. They established colonies and churches. These immigrants later formed the Christian Reformed Church.
