Once a haven for steamboat travelers Neptune Island holds a captivating history. This small island in Long Island Sound is part of New Rochelle New York. Connected to the mainland by a stone causeway it’s more accessible than you might think.

Originally part of the town commons Neptune Island changed hands after the American Revolution. Anthony Lispenard Bleecker owned it for a time. In 1828 William Turpin bought it renaming it Moses Island. He built the road and causeway that still exist today. A steamboat dock was also constructed at the end of this road.

The island’s name shifted dramatically in 1837. Isaac and Deborah Underhill built the Neptune House a popular summer resort hotel. Its popularity led to the island’s renaming. The elegant white structure attracted visitors from far and wide.

Steamboats like the American Eagle Croton Economy and Island City ferried people between New Rochelle and New York City. In 1876 the Neptune House even served as a stop for Colonel DeLancey Kane’s Tally Ho coach. This daily coach ran between New Rochelle and New York City’s Brunswick Hotel.

The Underhills owned Neptune Island until 1885. Then Adrian G Iselin purchased it. He unfortunately demolished much of the Neptune House. Iselin’s impact was significant. He founded the New Rochelle and Pelham Railroad Company and the New Rochelle Street Railway Company. These companies significantly improved access to Neptune Island via the New York and New Haven Railroad. Mr Starin’s private steamboats further boosted travel to the island.

Four private houses now stand on a portion of the original Neptune House. Iselin generously donated a part of the island to New Rochelle for a park. Today the Huguenot Yacht Club resides on the western end. A bascule bridge now connects Neptune Island and Glen Island replacing the old ferry. So next time you’re in New Rochelle remember the rich and varied history of Neptune Island.
