Have you ever wondered where the easternmost point of Germany is located? Right here, in the picturesque municipality of Neiße, the easternmost point of Germany is nestled in a bend of the river Neisse. Here, in Zentendorf, an enchanting village belonging to Neiße, stands a historical marker that marks this special place. The marker, placed by a local historian in 1992, is shaped like a stylized map of Germany.

The village of Zentendorf itself might seem peaceful and quiet, but it has a long and turbulent history. After centuries of being a village in the Kingdom of Prussia, at the end of World War II, it was transferred to Poland. It was only due to the aftermath of the war, that Zentendorf and Neiße along with the rest of Lusatia, got transferred back to Germany in 1950. The Easternmost point of Germany, right here in front of you, lay for centuries in the province of East Prussia, marked by a quaint little village called Schirwindt. But Schirwindt did not make it through the war. It fell under Soviet control and is now a village belonging to the Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia. Today, while it is not as well-known, the marker here in Zentendorf, stands testament to the resilience of a village that, like so many other border towns, has seen its share of ups and downs and its borders shifting like a kaleidoscope. This monument, though only placed in 1992, signifies the unity and future of Germany.
