“Pad” echoes through the ages. Neilston Pad. Have you heard that name before? This distinctive hill stands a mile south of Neilston village. Locally, they just call it “The Pad”.

Neilston Pad rises to 261 metres. That’s 856 feet. Its summit is a flat plateau. Steep slopes surround it. Distinctive forestry marks its eastern side. This odd shape makes it easy to spot from Glasgow.

Imagine being here centuries ago. The views would be similar. You’d see the same rolling landscape. Today, a well-constructed gravel path encircles Neilston Pad. Access paths extend north and south. Secondary paths lead to the summit.

Let’s climb to the top. There are two cairns. One is large and impressive. Many mistake it for the summit. Don’t be fooled. The true summit is a smaller cairn. It sits about 50 metres east of the larger one.

Look around. Reservoirs dot the landscape. Craighall Reservoir lies to the west. Locals call it Craighall Dam. Snypes Reservoir is to the east. Keepers Dam is a smaller body of water to the north.

Neilston Pad boasts extensive forestry. It covers the eastern and southern sides. Large areas also lie alongside the eastern flank. Sadly, in 2019, many trees were felled. Twenty thousand trees were cut down. This was to stop the spread of phytophthora ramorum. This fungus-like pathogen kills larch trees.

The felling disturbed walking routes. Access around Craighall Reservoir was damaged. Now the area is recovering. New paths emerge. Nature adapts.

From the summit, Glasgow sprawls to the north. On a clear day, you might see the Isle of Arran. Closer, notice the patchwork of fields. Farms dot the landscape. Dairy cows graze peacefully. Sheep roam the meadows. Woods add texture.

Reservoirs shimmer in the sunlight. They turn the landscape into a water-world. Light dances on the surface. Deep colours saturate the scene. It’s a view that changes with the seasons.

This area was managed by Elderslie Estates. This lasted from the 1990s until 2021. Then it was sold to a private buyer or consortium.

Neilston Pad is more than just a hill. It’s a landmark. It’s a viewpoint. It’s a place for walking. It’s a slice of Renfrewshire countryside. The Pad calls to adventurers. Its trails and views are its treasures. Stand here and feel the history beneath your feet. Feel the wind on your face. Hear the whispers of the past carried on the breeze. Neilston Pad. A place to remember.
