Did the walls of Neighborhood Baptist Church ever hear a church bell ringing in Old San Diego? Perhaps. Our story begins in 1869 with a small group of believers and a vision for a Baptist church in the burgeoning city of New San Diego. Alonzo Horton, the city’s founder, himself championed this vision. He challenged Protestant denominations to establish their presence. The First Baptist congregation answered the call, officially organizing on June 5, 1869. Their first services were held in a modest room in what is now downtown San Diego. Construction on their first building began in August 1869 on Seventh Street near F, land generously donated by Horton. The church opened its doors for worship on October 3rd, 1869. Horton’s contribution didn’t end there. He gifted the congregation a bell, the very first church bell in New San Diego. This bell, known as the Horton Prize Bell, was dedicated on October 31, 1869. While the original First Baptist Church eventually relocated and evolved, the echoes of its early days resonate with Neighborhood Baptist Church, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith in San Diego. The Horton Prize Bell, a tangible link to those foundational moments, now rests in the rafters of the current First Baptist Church building in University City. It is still rung on special occasions, a beautiful reminder of the church’s humble beginnings and the generosity of San Diego’s founder. So, while we stand before Neighborhood Baptist Church today, imagine the sound of that bell echoing through the early streets of San Diego, calling the faithful to worship and marking the beginning of a rich Baptist heritage.
