Was it really 1948 when Needville High School first opened its doors? This public high school is located in unincorporated Fort Bend County. But it has a Needville postal address. Needville High School is part of the Needville Independent School District. It holds a special place in this community.
Needville High School is classified as a 4A school by the UIL. It serves students from Needville and surrounding areas. These areas include Fairchilds and parts of Pleak. Guy and Long Point students also attend. The Texas Education Agency rated the school as Met Standard in 2015.
Before Damon High School opened, Damon ISD students attended Needville High. This arrangement began with a 1949 contract. The contract ensured Damon ISD students could study here.
The Needville Blue Jays compete in many sports. These include volleyball and cross country. Football, basketball, and powerlifting are also popular. Students can also participate in golf and tennis. Track, baseball, and softball are other options. Interior and exterior design competitions are available too.
Needville High School has celebrated several state titles. The softball team won in 2009. The boys track team triumphed in 1979 and 1980. The volleyball team has an impressive record. They won in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1992, and 2017.
A fire struck the original Needville High School building in 2007. It started around 3:45 AM on April 24. Twenty-one fire departments responded. By 6:00 AM, the building was still ablaze. By 7:00 PM, only smoldering rubble remained. The 1937 building was gone. A computer lab and other equipment were lost.
The fire occurred after a bond issue for a new high school. $49 million was earmarked for the project.
In 2018, Needville High School faced controversy. This was after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Superintendent Curtis Rhodes threatened to suspend protesting students. The school’s Facebook page was taken down.
In 2020, another incident occurred. A student was asked to remove their BLM mask. The school cited potential conflict. But masks supporting Donald Trump were allowed. The school then banned all political masks. Only plain masks or those with US, Texas, or Needville High logos were permitted.
In 2022, a family filed a lawsuit against Needville ISD. The lawsuit was because a student was allegedly denied graduation. This was due to the length of his hair.
Today, Steve Adamson is the principal of Needville High School. Assistant principals include Derek Maresh, Kristin Wyatt, and Heather Cordova. Berni Reyes serves as the administration secretary.
Needville High School’s motto is Committed to Educational Excellence. The school colors are royal blue and white. The mascot is the Bluejays/Lady Jays. The yearbook is called Bluejay. The school’s website offers more information.
