Perhaps Neckarstadt-Ost whispers stories of transformation. It stands as one of Mannheim’s six inner districts. Neckarstadt-Ost sits proudly on the Neckar’s right bank.
Neckarstadt-Ost is more than just a location. It is a vibrant tapestry woven through time. Let’s embark on a journey through its past. We will uncover the layers that make it so unique.
Imagine Mannheim in 1689. The Palatinate Succession War ravaged the city. Residents scattered seeking refuge. Some ventured across the Neckar. They settled on sandy hills in an area called Wohlgelegen. They named their settlement Neu-Mannheim. Life was hard in their humble huts. However this event had little impact on the Neckarstadt-Ost we see today.
Fast forward to 1827. Paolo Giulini established a chemical factory north of the Neckar. It was in Wohlgelegen. This factory later merged in 1854. In 1842 the new main cemetery was established. It marked an expansion of the Neckarstadt. The 1870s saw the rise of a brewery. It was a precursor to today’s Eichbaum-Brauerei. It stood on Käfertaler Straße. This land had previously served as an underground beer storage. The Krematorium began operations in 1901. The Grenadier Regiment 110 moved into the new Kaiser Wilhelm Barracks that same year. These barracks later became the US Kaserne Turley Barracks after 1945.
The streets in the Lange Rötter area received their names in spring 1902. Residential development began. A residential area emerged between the brewery and the barracks. The state prison was completed in 1909. The construction of the “Städtischen Krankenanstalten” extended over years after 1910. It finally opened in 1922. It is now the Mannheim University Hospital. The Neckarpark was closed to the public in 1917. The Uhlandschule was completed in 1913. The Melanchthon Church was built next to it in 1923.
After 1922 the Neckar riverbank was expanded. This happened above the Friedrichsbrücke. Today, it’s the Kurpfalzbrücke. 200 apartments were built. This construction took place on the Schafweide. The Friedrich Ebert Bridge opened in 1926.
The Mannheim Fair moved to the “Neuer Messplatz” in 1963. It had been held on the “Alter Messplatz” since 1876. The Herzogenried settlement was built in the mid-1970s. This was in connection with the Bundesgartenschau 1975. The Herzogenriedpark had been developed gradually since 1928. The US armed forces withdrew in 2007. The Turley Barracks were abandoned. They became part of conversion measures.
Today Neckarstadt-Ost thrives as a cultural hub. It is home to the Alte Feuerwache and the Capitol. Lange Rötterstraße offers many shopping opportunities. Residents find everything for daily needs here. The Herzogenriedpark provides adventures for young visitors.
The district consists of four parts. These are Herzogenried, Wohlgelegen, Neckarstadt-Nordost, and Neckarstadt-Ost.
The Alter Messplatz is the linchpin between Neckarstadt-West and Ost. It features water and light installations. It serves as a meeting point for all ages.
Neckarstadt-Ost stands as a testament to Mannheim’s history. It has overcome destruction and has embraced renewal. It offers culture, community, and a glimpse into the soul of Mannheim.
