A colossal steel structure. That’s the Neckarauer Übergang. It stands tall a testament to engineering. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a vital artery in Mannheim’s heart.

The Neckarauer Übergang’s story begins in 1887. A first bridge opened that year. It gracefully spanned the railway tracks east of the main station. Connecting Lindenhof Almenhof and Neckarau in the south to Schwetzingerstadt and Oststadt in the north. This original bridge was a marvel a lifeline for Mannheim’s burgeoning districts.

But times change. The bridge aged. The weight of history and the ever-increasing traffic took their toll. The old Neckarauer Übergang saw its share of trams. The tram line connecting Schwetzingerstadt to Neckarau used this bridge from 1903 onwards. A thorough renovation followed in 1933. The Reichsbahn handled the iron structure. The city focused on the supporting walls ramps and the bridge deck. By 1935 this improved bridge served the city well. War damage and subsequent repairs marked its mid-century years. By 2008 it was showing its age. Corrosion forced its demolition. A temporary bridge stood ready. For almost two and a half years. It ensured that Mannheim’s vital transport flow did not stop.

Then came the new Neckarauer Übergang. Designed by Frankfurt architectbüro Speer. Its opening in June 2009 marked a new era. It’s six meters wider than its predecessor. A dedicated track for trams and buses now exists. The bridge stands six point twenty meters higher. High-speed trains can now glide smoothly under this magnificent structure.

The Neckarauer Übergang connects seamlessly with the Südtangente. This improved traffic flow was made possible by a 2012 project. A new tram stop near the Hochschule Mannheim was created. Access to the B 36 highway became more effortless. The Glücksstein-Quartier project made this integration happen.

The Neckarauer Übergang is more than just a bridge. It’s a symbol. A symbol of Mannheim’s resilience. Its innovative spirit and its constant progress. It stands as a landmark of engineering. Connecting communities across generations. This bridge whispers tales of progress. It has witnessed countless journeys. It will continue to do so for decades to come. The Neckarauer Übergang is a bridge to the future. A future built on the legacy of the past.
