Nebbiensches Gartenhaus

Once upon a time, in the heart of Frankfurt’s Bockenheimer Anlage, nestled among lush greenery, stands the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus. This charming neoclassical pavilion whispers tales of bygone eras. The Nebbiensches Gartenhaus has witnessed over 200 years of Frankfurt’s history. It was designed and built around 1810, likely by the architect Nicolas Alexandre Salins de Montfort. The pavilion was commissioned for the third wedding of publisher Marcus Johann Nebbien. Nebbien had purchased the properties at Hochstraße 10-22 in 1807. He later built a residence on number 18, and the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus formed the northern boundary of his estate. After Nebbien’s passing, the Gartenhaus served various purposes. It was once a mustering point for Frankfurt recruits and an artist’s studio. Remarkably, the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus survived the WWII air raids unscathed, a lone survivor among 250 similar garden houses. In 1952, thanks to donations, the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus was renovated. The surrounding ornamental garden was redesigned. Two fountains were added. One is a marble Italian Renaissance fountain, the Florentiner-Brunnen, originally from the Villa Waldfried. This villa belonged to Carl von Weinberg, a Frankfurt entrepreneur persecuted by the Nazis. The other is a small fountain crafted from a white sandstone capital. It is adorned with a wrought-iron fountain house. Today, the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus serves as a vibrant hub for the Frankfurter Künstlerclub. This club, founded in 1955, hosts regular exhibitions of regional artists, poetry readings, and concerts. The Nebbiensches Gartenhaus offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle. It provides a glimpse into Frankfurt’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.
