In 1921 Reverend John Johnson’s heart was moved by the Lord. He opened a Christian Mission. A few faithful members prayed for God’s blessings. Nazareth Baptist Church Inc was founded in 1923. Its first location was at 39 West 140th Street NYC. As membership grew the church moved to 159 West 130th Street. They stayed there until purchasing 49 West 128th Street. Reverend Johnson remained pastor until his death in 1946. Reverend Fred Middleton served for seven years. In 1953 Reverend Jethro Wright Sr was elected pastor. The congregation grew. They bought two buildings. Tragedy struck. A fire destroyed their church during the Harlem Riots. For five years they worshipped in various locations throughout the five boroughs. They even used a basement. The congregation sadly diminished. In 1980 God guided Pastor Jethro Wright Sr and members to buy a vacant garage at 490 East 165th Street Bronx NY. Four years later Nazareth Baptist Church opened its doors for worship. Reverend Vivian Nottage and Reverend Jethro Wright Jr were ordained as the first son and daughter of Nazareth. Many members persevered through hardship. They trusted in the Lord. Pastor Jethro Wright Sr served for 59 years. He passed in 2012. Reverend Vivian Nottage continued the ministry for four years. In 2017 Reverend Jonathan Nottage Sr was elected the fourth pastor. He leads Nazareth today. Nazareth Baptist Church serves the South Bronx community. They assist the poor and needy. They provide food clothes and school supplies. They also help rehabilitated inmates and substance abuse victims. Nazareth Baptist Church continues to thrive serving God and its community. It is a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring power of community.
