Hello everyone. We are standing before the Nazareth Baptist Church in New Orleans. I am excited to share its story with you.
The story of Nazareth Baptist Church begins with Rev. John Meyers Sr. He was born in 1870. He came from St. Helena Parish. Rev. Meyers moved to East Feliciana Parish. There he married Sarah Green.
The Meyers family sought better prospects. They relocated to Lafourche Parish. In July 1920, Rev. Meyers established Nazareth Baptist Church. His legacy as the founding pastor is honored. Rev. John Meyers Sr. passed away in 1951. His home was on South Claiborne Avenue.
Rev. James W. Young followed Rev. Meyers. He was born in 1906 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Rev. Young earned a Theology degree in 1950. It was from Union Baptist Theological Seminary. He became pastor of Second Nazareth Baptist Church in 1952. He served until 1994. Rev. Young held positions in religious organizations. These included the First District Missionary Association. He also served in the Christian Ministers Alliance. Rev. Young died in New Orleans in 1995.
In 2009, Rev. Roger Graham stepped in. He served as the interim pastor. His first sermon was on April 19, 2009.
Today, Rev. Marc A. Napoleon leads the congregation.
Nazareth Baptist Church is one of many churches in New Orleans. The city has a rich religious history. There are numerous Baptist churches. They are part of a large community of faith. Baptist churches emphasize adult baptism. Each congregation governs itself. This autonomy is a key part of their tradition.
The early 1800s marked the entry of Baptists into Louisiana. Missionaries traveled through Mississippi. They arrived in the Natchez region. Before 1803, the religious environment was challenging.
Missionaries noted a lack of religious materials. Some reported the absence of Bibles. They also mentioned that priests restricted their distribution. Despite these challenges, Baptist preachers persisted. They faced threats. They showed remarkable courage.
The first Baptist church in Louisiana was Half Moon Bluff Church. It was established in 1812. It was near the Bogue Chitto River. Calvary Baptist Church followed shortly after. It was founded in Bayou Chicot in 1812.
The Baptist presence in New Orleans grew slowly. James A. Raynoldson was an early missionary. He came from North Carolina in 1816-17. The first Baptist church in the city was established in 1843.
Nazareth Baptist Church continues this legacy. It offers a place for worship. It is a center for community engagement.
