What is the meaning of “Nayot”? Well, stand here with me in this peaceful Jerusalem neighborhood and I’ll tell you. Nayot, established in 1960, gets its name from the Hebrew word for “oases.” The name, found six times in the Bible, particularly in the book of Samuel, was suggested by Professor Shlomo Morgen, a long-time resident. It was the first neighborhood in Jerusalem built by Anglo immigrants. In the 1950s, eager to find a place to call home, these immigrants formed a committee and leased land from the Jewish National Fund. Can you picture it? This area, now home to the serene Jerusalem Botanical Gardens, was once a plot of land outside Jerusalem’s city limits. These determined individuals, primarily from the United States and Canada, even established a mortgage fund, a novel concept in Israel at the time. Their legacy lives on in this tranquil neighborhood, a testament to their pioneering spirit and a peaceful oasis in the heart of Jerusalem.
